The motel closed in 2012 or 2013 and then sustained massive damage in a major hail storm. It was bought in 2017 by a new owner who has publicly stated intentions to reopen it.

They used vintage postcards of the motel to recreate it exactly.

The motel was remodeled about 1998 & its sign restored in 2003. Southwest Outdoor Electric of Albuquerque rebuilt the sign and the neon work was done by A Brighter Image Neon, also of Albuquerque.

The Sun ‘n Sand Motel opened before 1956 by John J. Coury, a Santa Rosa businessman & head of the city council, who served as mayor from 1956-1958 & again from 1969 to 1976, when he sold the motel.
